Dear HonestReporting Canada Subscriber, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman was recently in Canada for meetings with politicians and media en route to the UN for last week’s showdown over the Palestinian bid for statehood. In an interview with Sun News last week, Lieberman threatened “a very strong reaction” should the Palestinian Authority’s unilateral declaration of independence pass at the United Nations. While in Ottawa on September 19, Lieberman said that the Israeli response to the Palestinian gambit was yet to be determined, but that Israel’s “reaction to the unilateral decision will be very strong. Everyone understands it is a very bad direction and a precedent for other parts of the world.”
Canoë, the French-language news portal based in Quebec, carried the Sun News story with a shocking twist. Its headline and lead paragraph declared that Israel and its Foreign Minister, “Threatens the World”. Though such a headline would be understandable if referring to Iran or North Korea, describing peaceful and democratic Israel as a country that “threatens the world” is egregious.
When asked by HonestReporting Canada to remove this offensive headline and statement from their news article, Canoë insisted it copied the text from Agence France Presse and has so far declined to take responsibility for this inaccurate and sensationalist language. Canoë also declined to explain how Israel’s weighing of sanctions against the PA translated into the menace of a global threat.
