HRC informed CBC News and Globe and Mail editors that an Associated Press report both news organizations published today had wrongly implied that Tel Aviv is Israel’s seat of government and power, effectively its capital.
The article about an alleged Israeli airstrike on a Damascus military airport erroneously reported the following:
“Syrian army command said on Friday that Israel fired rockets at a major military airport west of Damascus, the capital, and warned Tel Aviv of repercussions of what it called a “flagrant” attack.”
“Damascus airport was also hit by air strikes in 2013. Tel Aviv neither confirms nor denies involvement in striking targets inside Syria.”
HonestReporting.com had notified Associated Press editors of their error, after which an amendment was made replacing “Tel Aviv” with “Israel”.
Following our complaint, both CBC.ca and the Globe and Mail amended their articles to remove this false reference. Meanwhile, CBC issued the following correction notice:
In response, HonestReporting Canada called on the CBC to acknowledge in its correction notice that Israel claims its capital city is Jerusalem, though this may be disputed by many countries.
